A pair of local events in Tacoma and Puyallup will give children the chance to get in touch with nature and learn some cool things in the process.

"Pier Peer," hosted by Tacoma's Metro Parks, gives kids age 8 and older a chance to explore hundreds of different marine life forms - including some "alien" looking creatures drawn to underwater lights placed off local docks.

The family-friendly event gives kids the chance to see and touch creatures brought up from the deep by local divers. Kids can also participate in a plankton tow. After the outdoor adventure, Metro Parks staff members will lead kids inside to warm up, drink hot cocoa and talk about what they saw.

It is recommended people dress for the weather, as the docks can be wet. Families should also bring their own flashlights; Metro Parks will provide life jackets as well as scoops to catch sea creatures. All participants must wear life jackets, and those who are able should bring their own life jacket.

The event runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and cost is $6 per person. To register, visit www.metroparkstacoma.org.

The "Pier Peer" will run at the Point Defiance Marina (5912 N. Waterfront Drive, Tacoma) March 10, and at the Foss Waterway Seaport (705 Dock Street)

Feb. 25 and March 24.

While the Tacoma event has the ocean covered, the Puyallup event is all about the skies.

The Puyallup Public Library partners with the Tacoma Astronomical Society to host its annual Star Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7.

Children can enjoy a free evening of viewing stars through telescopes and the chance to make their very own stomp rocket.

The fifth annual event introduces children of all ages to basic scientific and mathematical principals of rocketry. Hot chocolate will be served to keep everyone warm. All ages are welcome and no registration is required.
