If you are holding a copy of this 2018 Welcome Guide, then you either found it inside one of our weekly military newspapers, The Ranger, NW Airlifter or JBLM Living, online via our social media, or you picked it up at one of our military support events.

Welcome to the Northwest!

This is a military town, and boy, are we fortunate it is.  The active military have been our neighbors here since 1917.  (Yep, Joint Base Lewis-McChord is 101 years old this year.  If you'd like to see the special 100th year magazine we published last year, you can find it on the home page of our web site at northwestmilitary.com.)  It's great to have a large military community in the South Sound because you bring great ideas, diversity and talents to our area.  Either in our churches, schools or social clubs, you are part of our lives and vice versa.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your stay on or off JBLM.  Yes, it does tend to be cloudy and gray a lot in the late fall to early spring, but the first time you see Mount Rainier on a crisp sunny day, backed by acres and acres of green trees, you'll hopefully see why we love living here.

While you are here, try and get out to explore.  Inside this guide we try to give you some ideas for making the most of your stay.  Also look for our Summer Guide which comes out April 26 -- that, too, will be packed with ways to explore the local area.

We also invite you to attend our 10 local military support events -- from our annual Salute to Military Kids to our Travel Fair, Pet Fair, and Summer Waterpark.  These are all free, and we strive to give you a free day of fun with your family.  The best way to know about upcoming military parties is to pick up our newspapers and/or follow us on our social media at such Facebook pages as JBLM Families and Welcome to JBLM.

We also send out military discounts and deals to those who like a bargain and want to know who supports you with military specials.  You can send us an email at publisher@northwestmilitary.com and we'll add you to our weekly email blast called JaBLAM.  You can also subscribe on your phone by texting NWMILITARY right now to 49654.  We also do a lot of ticket giveaways on all of our sites.

We hope to get to know you while you are here.  Enjoy your stay at JBLM, and please don't hesitate to contact us with story ideas.  You can send those to editor@northwestmilitary.com.

Finally, we offer a new Neighborhood Guide to the South Sound at weeklyvolcano.com.
