Skip the crowds at the mall and head to the Fort Lewis Thrift Shop to finish up your Christmas shopping. The Thrift Shop will be open an extra day to help with your holiday preparations. Come out Saturday, Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to find affordable treasures for your home and under the tree.

Santa will pay a visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring the kids to take pictures with Old Saint Nick in a cozy setting complete with Christmas trees and a fireplace. Kids will be treated to cookies and candy canes.

The Holiday Shop in the Thrift Shop is stocked with everything you need to decorate your home from trees and wreaths to stockings and ornaments. New and used merchandise also includes home décor, craft supplies, toys, books, clothing, purses, jewelry and more. Sales will be going on throughout the store with discounts as low as 85 percent.

A nonprofit organization, the Thrift Shop has been serving Joint Base Lewis-McChord since 1985. Proceeds benefit the military community with scholarships to military dependents and grants to schools and service organizations such as AFCS and the USO.

The store is run primarily by a team of over 35 dedicated volunteers, some who have served there for more than 30 years. Retired and active-duty military spouses, retired military and students from the Clover Park School District keep the store running smoothly.

"We owe our success to our volunteers who selflessly give their time to our organization," said Thrift Shop Manager Norma Felix. "They help process and price donated items, test electronics, place items on the floor and maintain our specialty shops. I want to thank our volunteers and the community for their support and generous donations."

Long-time volunteer Betty Fleig says, "The Thrift Shop gives back to the military community in so many ways. I have enjoyed volunteering for 40 years as a military spouse and love every minute I come in."

Joaan Churchill is another military spouse who has been volunteering at thrift stores for over 20 years. "The funds raised go right back to the military community," she said. "We also help local military personnel who need clothes or household goods. It's a joy to work with the other volunteers. We are like a big extended family."

The Thrift Shop is located in buildings 2070 and 2071 on Pendleton Ave. You'll find the Holiday Shop in the back of building 2070. Join the fun this Saturday and stay on budget with frugal finds for your holiday needs.
