A significant part of America's story is discovered in the nation's military history.

Within this history - within the workings of who did what, with what and when - the public begins to understand and appreciate the past events and sacrifices that have shaped the present.

"We are the American people's museum," stated Erik Flint, director, Lewis Army Museum.

With more than 30 years of continuous military service, with a sterling academic background, and with a clear desire to highlight the history of Camp Lewis, Fort Lewis and now Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Flint is leading the museum deeper into the 21st century.

"The American public will have more direct access to this museum, their museum," he said.

Built in 1919, the building was once referred to as the Red Shield Inn. It remains the last standing structure from a recreational area once known as Greene Park.

Currently, the museum is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation that features redesigned open areas, better lighting and updated historical displays.

Flint pointed out that the JBLM command staff and the Army's Center of Military History have been exceptional in their support of the renovation.

"When the work is done, it will be absolutely beautiful," continued Flint.  Pausing for a moment, he then came back to his message. "This is funded by the taxpayers; it is their museum."

The Lewis Army Museum is scheduled to reopen toward the end of August. For updates, visit lewisarmymuseum.com.

From the history of the Army in the Pacific Northwest and the construction of Camp Lewis in 1917, to the growth of Fort Lewis, and finally to the evolution of JBLM in 2017, the museum is home not only to the artifacts from its rich history, but it also serves as the repository of some of the written words surrounding those events.

To that end, the museum serves as a research site, a training site for soldiers, and an educational center for the public.  It also features classrooms used for training purposes.

"This is a wonderful place to come to learn about the Army," explained Flint.

A part of that history is the mission of Armed Forces Day, first celebrated May 20, 1950.  The day was designed to expand the public's understanding of the role of the military in American life.

This year, Armed Forces Day will be celebrated May 20.

It also honors and acknowledges those who currently wear the cloth of this country.

The Lewis Army Museum captures this spirit, and when its renovation is complete, it will present it to the public.

"This museum is the American public's," continued Flint. "It belongs to them; it is part of our history."
