Any pet owner in the South Sound knows Mud Bay.

Since 1988, the Olympia-based company has provided food, toys, treats and other supplies for cats and dogs, and its annual - and currently ongoing - Tons of Love campaign provides thousands of dollars in donations and supplies to animal shelters each year.

Since no two cats or dogs are exactly alike, Mud Bay offers a unique assortment to cater to your unique pet.

My dog Coco - an 11-year-old Aussie Chow Chow mix - not only has an aging set of teeth, but a sensitivity to wheat, making for a potentially pricey and picky puppy palette. Fortunately, Becca Taylor, manager at Mud Bay's University Place location and co-owner of an elderly dog herself, helped me assemble a snack pack from Mud Bay's huge assortment of doggie treats that would cater to Coco's diet:

Smoked and Regular Beef Ear, Best Buy Bones ($1.99 ea.)

Thinner and softer than the tried-and-true pig ear, beef ears still offer lots of chewy goodness without putting too much strain on an aging dog's choppers, though I'm guessing younger dogs won't have any complaints either. Plus, the smoked ear smells exactly like barbecue potato chips.

100% Rabbit & Rabbit/Sweet Potato Jerky, Hare of the Dog ($1.99 ea.)

More of a treat than a chew toy, these jerky strips won't last long, but your pooch will be very happy while they last. A bit crumbly for a jerky treat, both the regular rabbit and rabbit/sweet potato blend have a surprisingly earthy, almost herbal smell to them that belies their meaty nature.

Lamb Twist, Nature's Own ($3.49 ea.)

These lamb twists are hypoallergenic, all-natural and made from free-range lambs, meaning that even the lambs were happy until they got turned into dog treats. If ever there were a dog treat that captured a perfect balance between toy and food, this is it. Flexible and chewy, they'll provide your dog with plenty of play in addition to a snack, eventually.

All-Natural Beef Taffy, Go Go ($3.99 ea.) and Texas Taffy, Merrick ($3.49 ea.)

You know those breath freshening strips that melt on your tongue? Imagine that they are six inches long, made of meat and take about half an hour to dissolve. Seemingly tailor-made for old teeth, these chew treats literally melt in a dog's mouth.

Cod Skin, Mud Bay ($.99 ea.)

These look like something you'd want to bury deep in the garbage to keep raccoons from getting at them. What horrible dog owner would ever offer their dog a dry, scaly fish skin? Despite being the least expensive item in the lot, these were the biggest hit with Coco - she snatched them from my hand so fast I almost lost a finger. (And they don't have much of a smell to them, thankfully.)

These are just a handful of the items that Mud Bay offers. If you're wondering what to get that special furry someone, Mud Bay has all kinds of specialized toys, food, treats and supplies to cater to your four-legged family members this holiday season.
