Free cakes for South Sound kids

Free Cakes for Kids South Sound is a non-profit organization that helps children celebrate their birthday with a birthday cake.  Sometimes a child is nominated to receive a cake due to living circumstances while in foster care, a shelter, or the family's financial situation is limited.

Mischell Devine-Nunner is the co-founder of Free Cakes for Kids South Sound and is the coordinator for the Free Cakes for Kids South Sound chapter.  Starting in 2008 with 25 cakes and jumping to 871 in 2011, Free Cakes for Kids South Sound is off to a great start in 2012 with 53 cakes in the first two months.  Mischell is anticipating that their 2012 cake count will exceed that of 2011.

Free Cakes for Kids South Sound began when Mischell and her husband decided that they needed to spend time volunteering since their children are grown.  On a flight to Mexico, Mischell was reading an article about Free Cakes for Kids.  She knew that this was the organization where they could volunteer.  Mischell knew she could use her experience and love of decorating cakes and put it to good use.  She contacted the founder via email as soon as they reached their hotel.  The chapter began shortly after they arrived back home.

Since then, it has been a labor of love, time, money, and more love getting the chapter set up, volunteers, and the word about what this "share-ity" does.  Mischell and others prefer to call Free Cakes a "share-ity" as they are sharing with others.  This is not a charity but the opportunity for those with cake decorating talents to share their talents with children who are having a birthday.

Free Cakes for Kids South Sound covers from Bellingham to Vancouver for cake needs.

2012 marks year 5 for Free Cakes for Kids South Sound and things look promising.  Year three for this 501(c)(3) was in the black and has been since, which has allowed the Nunner's to thank others for their contributions of funds to keep the organization going strong.

Free Cakes for Kids South Sound has had far reaching effects and not just for the kids.  One of the volunteers who worked with Mischell was a military wife.  When her husband transferred to Texas, she carried the Free Cakes for Kids vision and started her own chapter in Texas.  Another volunteer whose own children were recipients of Free Cakes for two years in a row is now a volunteer herself making cakes for other children.

"One of the simplest gestures we take for granted is having a birthday cake," Mischell said when asked about the purpose of Free Cakes for Kids South Sound.  Now, those children who, for whatever reason, are unable to have one provided by their own family can still celebrate their birthday with a birthday cake.
