Young Albert enlists to service in WWI after his beloved horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry. Albert's hopeful journey takes him out of England and across Europe as the war rages on.
Steven Spielberg's epic follows the fortunes of a handsome horse named Joey as it begins life on a farm in Devon and then finds itself embroiled on both sides of World War I. Young Jeremy Irvine stars as the farm boy who is Joey's first and last master, and there are strong performances by Peter Mullan and Emily Watson as his parents. Battle sequences of extraordinary effect, consequences that are deeply moving, but perhaps too sentimental, especially in an ending that depends on surely impossible coincidence. - Three and a half stars
