Northwest Military's Review

Steven Spielberg's epic follows the fortunes of a handsome horse named Joey as it begins life on a farm in Devon and then finds itself embroiled on both sides of World War I. Young Jeremy Irvine stars as the farm boy who is Joey's first and last master, and there are strong performances by Peter Mullan and Emily Watson as his parents. Battle sequences of extraordinary effect, consequences that are deeply moving, but perhaps too sentimental, especially in an ending that depends on surely impossible coincidence. - Three and a half stars
