For those active duty and retired military personnel who enjoy the spectacular camping opportunities Washington State has to offer, discounts abound! Both the government and proprietors of privately owned campgrounds wish to sincerely thank our soldiers for their faithful service. Listed below, find several great deals for family vacations.

The Seattle/Tacoma KOA is offering 25 percent off a stay with the presentation of valid DOD identification. Their campground is located next to the Green River in Kent, about 45 minutes from the Lakewood area.  It's the perfect place to bring out-of-state relatives wanting to explore Seattle's urban metropolis while getting enjoying outdoor recreation.

The campground offers both deluxe RV and shaded tent sites as well as free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, bike path, and a seasonal pool and pancake breakfast.

Call (800) 562-1892 or go to www.koa.com/where/wa/47161/reserve.

Both the privately owned Olympia and American Heritage Campgrounds in Olympia offer a 10 percent discount with DOD identification as long as you pay cash. Call (360) 943-8778 or go to www.olympiacamground.com to reserve online.

Military personnel are fortunate in that there are many beautiful campgrounds available only to them.  For personnel stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, spend a night under the stars without traveling far from home at Fort Lewis Travel Camp on the banks of American Lake. Tent fees are only $5.50 - a bargain compared to the $21 campsite fee charged by most state parks.

RVs are allowed and free cable TV is available. The campground is open year round. This camp offers coin-operated laundry facilities and restrooms with hot showers.

Those serving at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station have easy access to one of Washington's most beloved state parks at Deception Pass. The park is known for outstanding views, its old-growth forest and abundant wildlife. Camping is available at three locations in the park: 18 tent sites and two utility sites are at Bowman Bay; two tent sites and 58 utility sites at Sunrise Resort; and 147 tent sites and 83 sites at Cranberry Lake.

Reservations are accepted year-round. Call (888) CAMPOUT.

Enjoy a bit of military history at Fort Worden State Park's campground. The facility includes a 19th century military fort, two campgrounds with 80 campsites that can be reserved up to a year in advance (highly recommended to ensure a spot at this popular site). Campers can enjoy restrooms with hot showers and RVs are welcome.

Fees vary, depending on the site, but expect to pay about $40/night: a bit steep but well worth it for the history and scenery offered at the park where An Officer and a Gentleman was filmed in 1982. Reservations can be made at https://secure.camis.com/WA.
