Saturday, June 14: Masterworks Sings Sinatra

Washington Center

By Volcano Staff on June 9, 2014

Frank Sinatra always swung in his own fawning way - he would never have made it with bands such as Dorsey's or Harry James' if he hadn't. He frequently improvised, both music and words. Musically it was essentially embellishing the line with a few notes or a phrase, always right on the changes. Lyrically it was tossing in a word or two, changing a phrase here and there - just as Billie Holiday did. In the words of Sinatra's signature song, "And more, much more than this, I did it my way," Masterworks Choral Ensemble will be singing Sinatra their way.

Masterworks wraps up its 33rd season with a tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes June 14 at the Washington Center. The community choir under the direction of Gary Witley will present a lively line-up of Frank Sinatra favorites. "People who know Sinatra will know everything that we sing," says Witley, "but there will still be room for surprises in the arrangements. For example, ‘Blue Moon,' a ballad sung by Sinatra, will be done as doo-wop."

The program will include "That Old Black Magic" and "Just One of Those Things," and guest soloist Karen Karnes singing "All the Way." Karnes was the winning bidder for a concert solo during Masterworks' silent auction in December. The choir will also welcome to the stage youth soloist Alexander Werner on violin. Werner was the elementary school age winner of Masterworks' Youth Music Competition last May.

That's the Masterworks' way.
