Tuesday, Jan. 28: Comics and Pizza Club

Harmon Tap Room

By John Kephart on January 20, 2014

When you think "book club," is the first image that comes to mind a bunch of middle-aged women with their chairs pulled in a circle sipping white wine and discussing the latest hoity-toity-pabulum-for-the-masses endorsed by Oprah? If you're like me, that holds absolutely zero appeal. Give me something that's fun and exciting ... that I can enjoy dissecting with friends over pizza and a beer - if there's an added visual component, even better. King's Books' freshly-minted Comics and Pizza Club - a merging of its graphic novels discussion group and its Capes and Cowls Club - neatly fills this niche. Forget Tuesdays With Morrie. Welcome to Tuesday With Mutants! (Feel free to use that, sweet pea).  Make no mistake; this isn't kid stuff despite the "comics" moniker. Nor is it all about heroes in tights. Instead, the club's selections range from the Super to the sublime. This month's pick, Death: The High Cost of Living by Neil Gaiman and Chris Bachalo, falls into the latter category. Copies of the book are available at King's Books (natch). The club meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Harmon Tap Room, so order that glass of Chablis, but only at your own discretion.

COMICS AND PIZZA CLUB, 7 p.m., Harmon Tap Room, 204 St. Helens, Tacoma, free admission, 253.272.8801
