Monday, June 6: Plateau

Le Voyeur Cafe and Lounge

By Rev. Adam McKinney on June 1, 2011

Plateau exhibits a heart-warming fondness for the harmonious, swaying pop of early Beatles, and the lovesick serenades of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Lead singer Adrian Tuohy's voice occasionally resembles the rougher edges that Valli's voice had when he dipped down into a lower range. He has a tinge of the bitter and pessimistic, even as he continues to pursue love and the girl that threatens to go away. At other times, Plateau boasts a power-pop bravado hinting more toward the wounded classicism of Big Star. It's a potent mix, and the result is a three-piece that seems firmly entrenched in the history and sad mythology of pop music - a band, workmanlike in its concise delivery system of strong hooks and memorable harmonies.
