Through Oct. 3: "Hairspray"

Paradise Theatre

By Christian Carvajal on September 16, 2010

It began as a 1988 John Waters film in which Ricki Lake (yes, that Ricki Lake) played Tracy Turnblad, a girl of size in 1962 Baltimore who wants nothing more than to dance on The Corny Collins Show. Drag queen Divine costarred as Tracy's mother. That film was adapted into a 2002 Broadway musical, which in turn was re-re-imagined as a 2007 movie starring Nikki Blonsky and noted drag artist John Travolta. Now Paradise Theatre in Gig Harbor brings us a new take on the musical; and if that brief history made your head spin, good luck understanding how we'll have dueling Hairsprays in the region next week. Tacoma Musical Playhouse opens its own production Sept. 24.
