Description: Bethany Maines' first novel, "Bulletproof Mascara", introduced us to cosmetic rep/ secret agent Nikki Lanier, who works for the Carrie Mae Foundation (a secret organization of international espionage and high-tech mascara founded for the purpose of "helping women everywhere"). In "Compact with the Devil", Nikki is embroiled in a case with a Basque anarchist, a bad-boy pop star, and, of course, some lethal cosmetic weaponry. Bethany Maines is a native of Tacoma and graduate of Western Washington University who is actually very much like her fictional heroine Nikki Lanier: she travels to exotic lands ("research"), kicks serious butt (third degree black belt in karate), and has a day job (graphic design) that lets her work with her puppy (who snores like a flugel horn).
