It’s a new week, which means it’s time for a new installment of Bobble Tiki’s South Sound music notes column. Let’s get rolling…

While the recent Music and Arts in Wright Park Festival contained many highlights for Bobble Tiki — including nearly being rocked off his early afternoon barstool at The Hob Nob by Micho de Noche — the high point of high points came for Bobble Tiki when Jeff Angell and Post Stardom Depression took to the stage. As sexy as ever — aside, Bobble Tiki supposes, from when guitarist Kyong Kim said hello to his young daughter between songs (cute yes, sexy no) — Post Stardom Depression quickly regained the strut they’ve displayed so many times. The rock was as thick as ever, and for just a moment, Bobble Tiki was transported back in time. It was a good feeling.

Well, after said PSD performance, Bobble Tiki caught up with frontman Jeff Angell and scored a copy of his new band’s recent record — Diamonds in a Dead Sky. His new band, of course, is The Missionary Position. Mixing a dirty, Motown-esque vibe with the classic gritty songwriting of Angell, it’s an effort that has spent little time out of Bobble Tiki’s stereo since.

This week Bobble Tiki got word from Angell that he’ll be back in town on Saturday, Sept. 19 for a show at Doyle’s. No stranger to the working man/working musician atmosphere that Doyle’s harnesses, Angell should go down smoother than a shot of Jameson.

Note to karaoke buffs: If you ever wanted to know just what “Tacoma’s Best Karaoke Singer” sounds like, head down to the Tacoma Rainiers game at Cheney Stadium tonite. Backed by Star Machine — a live karaoke band that gigs around town at the Swiss as well as the Muckleshoot Casino — tonite will be the culmination of a lengthy competition. After selecting 10 finalists from local karaoke spots like E-9, the Swiss and Jazzbones, the best of the best will battle it out for karaoke supremacy. According to the press release, “All the action will kickoff at 5:30 p.m. on the terrace level of the Rainiers left field party decks at Cheney Stadium.”

That’s hot.

For the record, Bobble Tiki’s karaoke vote goes to long time Java Jive patron Vinny Bob. The man deserves it, plus nobody rocks overalls like Vinny Bob.
