Meeting Peter Buck

Plus: Sons of Ivan go on hiatus

It’s a new week, which means it’s time for a new edition of Bobble Tiki’s South Sound music notes column. Let’s get rolling …

First, before we gaze forward, Bobble Tiki would like to take a moment to look back — way back, in fact, to last Friday’s Minus 5 show at Hell’s Kitchen. For those who missed it the show was simply amazing. Minus 5 frontman Scott McCaughey was in rare form — feeding off the crowd and feeding the crowd what they came for — and Peter Buck was, well, Peter Buck. What more could a music fan ask for?

Not much, really — but Bobble Tiki got an added bonus. Not only did he have the honor of actually meeting Mr. Buck, but he also received an e-mail from a certain esteemed member of the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office before the show that couldn’t help but remind Bobble Tiki just how cool Tacoma is. Yes, it seems this esteemed member of the Prosecutor’s Office, who may or may not replace Gerry Horne, was hanging with Peter Buck and Co. before the throwdown at the Kitchen, enjoying drinks and generally being more musically well connected than most of us dream of. And this guy wears a suit most days of the week. Pretty cool stuff. Only in Tacoma.

Looking to the future, and in sadder news, Tacoma’s Sons of Ivan officially announced their hiatus this week. No word on the root of said indefinite hiatus, but it seems all members of the band remain on good terms. Here’s the official announcement:

“The Sons of Ivan are on official hiatus as of yesterday and extending into an undefined length of time. We would like to give many thanks to all the people, family, friends and enemies that aided in our mission to bring our music to the minds and hearts of the people. Are we gone for good? That is a question yet to be fully answered. In the mean time please turn your attention to and check out some of the Sons other projects.

For those interested, those other projects are Bandolier, The Dignitaries and The Legend of Bigfoot. All are worthy of your ears.
