500 DAYS OF SUMMER: Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) had Summer (Zooey Deschanel) in his life for 500 days and can’t accept that they were numbered.  She had absolutely no interest in getting married.  A delightful comedy of bittersweet romance, stylishly inventive, charmingly acted, that tries everything from a musical number to a black-and-white sequence to deal with a story that refuses to be a well-behaved romcom.  Directed by Marc Webb. (PG-13) Four stars – Roger Ebert

ALIENS IN THE ATTIC: A group of kids are the last line of defense against invading aliens. (PG) – Bill White

THE COLLECTOR: A sadistic masked madman imprisons a wealthy family and terrorizes a desperate man who also targets the family’s home to pay off a debt. (R) – BW

FUNNY PEOPLE: Funny People stars Adam Sandler as an experienced comedian who finds out he's got a terminal disease. In the face of his own mortality, the comedian decides to take a newbie (Seth Rogen) under his wing and impart some some wisdom. Comedians Sarah Silverman, Andy Dick and Dave Attell play themselves. (R) Three and a half stars — RE

G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF THE COBRA: Early opening. (PG-13)

HERB AND DOROTHY: A documentary about a postal clerk and librarian of modest means who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in the world. (NR) – BW

JULIE & JULIA: Early opening. (PG-13)
