Sunday, June 7 the Brick City Project will teem with kids. But don’t even think they’re up to no good: these youths, part of the Fab 5 urban arts program L.I.F.E., are putting on a show that will mix up a slew of hip-hop art and culture into a great day of creativity and community.

The Fab 5 organization seeks to provide talent development and mentorship within the hip-hop culture for urban youths throughout Pierce County. Eddie Sumlin, Executive Director of Fab 5, explained that Sunday’s show is the “exclamation point” on two and a half months of honing break dancing, graffiti, DJ-ing, music production, and leadership skills.

From 2 to 4 p.m. the program will center, inside the building, on student-led workshops while a 15-passenger van will receive some mural-painting lovin’ as the air is filled with the smell of free Barbecue. Then from 4 to 7 p.m., students will showcase their learned skills and even “battle” their teachers in an epic B-Boy dance-off.

The event, planned from start to finish by the students, is free, though food, clothing, or financial donations are encouraged to help benefit various grassroots organizations serving Tacoma and beyond.
