Where were you the first time you tuned into 89.9 FM KGRG — either by accident or because the kids you were skipping third period with turned you onto it?

Bobble Tiki, of course, doesn’t remember, because he’s older than most and has willfully forgotten all memories that don’t involve close friends or relatives to make room for boxed wine deposits in his brain.

But Bobble Tiki does, however, sit next to Matt Driscoll in the Weekly Volcano War Room, and since he’s a whippersnapper comparatively speaking, Bobble Tiki was able to mine Driscoll for his KGRG memories.

“I used to call up and request the Supersuckers,” said Driscoll. “It was raw, and my parents couldn’t stand that shit, but it was exciting too. It made me want to get into radio — at least until I found out that, outside of college stations like KGRG, real deal radio is a field best suited for whores and those who don’t mind the idea of forgoing all original thought and pimping Car Toys’ Saturday Tent Sales.”

Indeed. Driscoll has never spoken truer words — except for when he confided in Bobble Tiki that he secretly believes the Denver Broncos will win four games next season.

Getting back to KGRG, though, this Saturday, May 9, KGRG will celebrate 20 years of its “Today’s Rock” format, which has helped shed a national spotlight on bands from Green River to Nirvana to Aiden. KGRG will take over The Viaduct in Tacoma starting at noon Saturday, and offer a day of music including headliner The Classic Crime, along with Brier Rose, I Declare War, Success! James Hunnicut and more.

“Since early 1989, bands such as Nirvana, Mudhoney, Presidents of the USA, MxPx, Modest Mouse, and a host of others were quickly elevated to national and worldwide status thanks in part to heavy early airplay championed by KGRG-FM,” said Tom Evans Krause, KGRG’s director of broadcast operations, in a press release.

Show the station some love this Saturday at The Viaduct.
