Film fund-raiser

Joe Rosati has a new flick

Low budget indie films don’t make themselves. They take time, people willing to work for very little (like, nothing) and even a little bit of money.

That last item on the list will draw comedians Rod Long, Colin Dillon and Lee Fleming to Jazzbones this Sunday, Oct 5, for a performance designed to raise money for Randy Sparks’ new film project, It Don’t Rain on Sunny Days. Considered by Sparks to be a “no budget film,” Sunday’s standup comedy action at Jazzbones will help pay for the various costs associated with making a movie. With a cast that includes Limbo’s Joe Rosati and comedians Long, Fleming and Dillon, along with Tacoma’s beloved Haggarty brothers and Blythe Oliver – not to mention heavily bearded director Justin Peterson — It Don’t Rain on Sunny Days has the potential to be one hell of a Tacoma-based dark comedy.

“Randy Sparks had had this story in his head for about 15 years,” says Rosati about the movie, which will see Rosati’s character win the lottery only to encounter nightmarish consequences. “He started thinking I might actually be able to do this film.”

“He really liked (Limbo), and apparently liked my acting ability, I guess,” continues Rosati about how he landed the lead roll.

“I thought Joe would be perfect for the part,” adds Sparks — who was pivotal in the production of the recent documentary Tacoma Chalk Off. “The main character is kind of a gullible guy.”

“This movie is another community project. Randy has assembled the people he feels are the movers and shakers in the regional scene,” says Rosati. “He wants it to be a showcase of talent, both locally and regionally.”

“What’s cool about this is we’re getting the word out way in advance,” says Rosati of Sunday’s fund-raiser at Jazzbones. “With four months of buildup hopefully there will be a lot more interest.”

While it’s early, It Don’t Rain on Sunny Days certainly seems like a project worth Tacoma’s interest. If you can’t make Sunday’s comedy show at Jazzbones, there’s a musical fund-raiser for the film at the Swiss Oct. 26 set to feature Randy Oxford, among other notable local musicians. Oxford, Junkyard Jane and Loose Gravel have all signed on to help with It Don’t Rain on Sunny Days’ soundtrack.
