Independent women

Friends buy homes, I spent little time at mine.

By Carmen Jones on March 6, 2008

I’d like to dedicate all of this week’s words to one of the finest things in life: Independent women!

Over the weekend I learned that two of my gal pals recently took the same plunge I have and bought their very own homes. Congratulations to Jada and Mizz Mandilicious!

Buying a home all by myself is one of the smartest things I’ve ever done, and it’s a milestone accomplishment that I’m so proud of.

Jada and Mizz Mandilicious are already feeling the same way. Nice!

I’m so glad I didn’t listen to the people who said I was making a huge mistake by buying a home alone because “no guy wants a girl who is THAT independent.”

That’s such bulls***.

All the women who’re independent, throw your hands up at me!

Fear Train Wednesday

Last Wednesday I headed to Jazzbones to catch Fear Train Caravan, the rock band that now includes my buddy Larry on bass. The Fear Train show was excellent as always, and it was so cool to watch the ever-entertaining Larry perform with them. Keep on rockin’!

Two cheers for Scott

After a threatening text message to my buddy Scott Goerig (it’s been too long since I’ve seen him!), I got to meet up with him and a load of other friends at The Red Hot, including Ching Powell, Carly, K to the K and Trish Delish. We drank tasty IPAs, laughed about old times, and got amazing hot dogs to-go to end the eve. It was so good to see everyone, and Goerig now knows why he must stay in touch.

The Helm plus MLK love

Saturday I caught up on house duties and rewarded myself with The Helm’s juried art show. There I got hugs from Mizz Mandilicous, New Friend Amy, James Hume, Daniel Blue and Blondie Linda. The artistic offerings from R.R. Anderson, Daniel Blue, Lucy Carpenter, Therese Cuff, Lynn Di Nino, Kristin Giordano, Maria Jost, Tim Mulligan, James Sinding and Amy Thomas was awesome, and I was so proud of Blue for winning Most Innovative.

After, I hopped into Monsoon for a long overdue Lavender L’Amour cocktail with lovely Jada, and then I met up with a former amazing colleague, Su and her fun husband Todd, at Tempest. We nibbled on nachos and the Tempest tostados (soooo good!), caught up on life’s most recent events and took in the scene that included lots of people and local DJ’s like Big Chuck and Lulu spinning mad beats. Tempest was full of beautiful peeps, and after Su and Todd adjourned for the evening, folks like Kendra, Boat Guy, Patrick, Michael, Brother Friend, Jess, Emily and The First Lady of Tacoma filed in. All I can say after that much fun is umch, umch.

My Saturday evening wrapped up at the Top of Tacoma where I found Niels, Tall Troy, Jaime Kay, Jason and Miranda, with Luke and Melissa serving up the tasty drinks. Thank gawd for sweet neighborhood bars!

I saw the blood

Sunday, I wrapped the weekend up by catching There Will Be Blood at the Grand along with most of the second fleet of friends who rolled into Tempest on Saturday. Holy crap, that movie was intense. No wonder Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award.
