Hailing from Brooklyn, Duo Live created some momentum and prestige by slinging mix tapes in the underground realm of New York’s hip-hop scene. Fitting, considering the duo, comprised of MC Fre and Sid V, dish out the jams like it’s nobody’s business. Their flow is easy — second nature; their voices complement each other like bread and butter, and perhaps most importantly, they spit lyrics that are socially conscious. Duo Live brings us back to the days of “money on your mind,” yet simultaneously sheds light upon issues that plague the inner city … it’s not just about the acquisition of money, it’s about its effect on our society, both positive and negative.

Duo Live’s latest release, The Color of Money, started swinging as soon as it stepped into the ring. Special appearances by heavy hitters Talib Kweli and Dead Prez complement Duo’s sultry sound and activist subject matter, but it’s Duo’s solo tracks that prove just how dope they can be. The album mixes elements of classic deejaying, beats reminiscent of the Puff Daddy days and new school intoxicators — bells and whistles that even Yung Joc has utilized. To put it plainly, this album is great to flip on and flabbergast. Check out “Truth Be Told” and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Results are in, and it’s clear that we have to start concerning ourselves with The Color of Money.
