Black and white is in

Move over color, it’s the season for black and white

By Julie Jordan on January 10, 2008

What’s black, white and chic all over? Everything this season. The combo of black and white has been a fashion statement ever since the days of Coco Chanel and Elisa Schiaparelli, and it’s back for 2008.

This trendy twosome was spotted all over the spring runways in bold silhouettes and high impact prints. Designers incorporated it in everything, from dresses and bags to dishware and towels, so your abode can partake in the cuteness.

The great thing about black is it leaves you free to experiment with a variety of designs. For example, a black leather skirt says chic and timeless, while a lime green leather skirt says, “I charge by the hour.”

Taking risks is easy with dark colors, but black and white can still be striking with simple pieces. Sport a solid black top with white bottoms for an easy and fresh look. This Hepburn-esque style is great if you’re top heavy because it de-emphasizes your upper deck. You can tie it all together with some eye-catching accessories. A white leather flower brooch is a rich accent to a simple black top or bag (Chanel $445).

Since plain black and white can seem a little bland, designers are spicing it up with different textures. Pleats, embroidery, ruffles and leather can give it a lil’ something.

The woven leather, silver chain and white tassels give this Zac Posen bag some extra bang for the buck ($1,795, eluxury.com).

I fell in love with A Jimmy Choo double zip clutch on saksfifthavenue.com. It’s made of zebra print pony hair with gold studs ($1,875.00). So hot, but you don’t have to spend a ton to sport this chic look. I scored a black and white houndstooth fur coat at Goodwill for only $14!

Even my beloved Target has some black and white this season. Erin Fetherston for Target makes an adorable satin baby doll dress for only $39.99. They even have some goods for the homestead. Fieldcrest Luxury makes some stunning towels in a black and white damask print. They’ll make you want to redecorate your bathroom immediately.

And when you’re looking for classic, White House/Black Market is the place to be. This joint has been way ahead of the game since they opened in 1997. Absolutely everything in the store is either black or white. You can’t go wrong. Check out their “Bubbly Silk Dress” while you’re there ($148). Adorable.

Unfortunately, their nearest boutique is in Kent, but you can also shop online. Plus, right now they’re having 60 percent off their winter apparel and accessories, so stock up. Their pieces are timeless, so you won’t be hesitant to wear them again next winter.

So, if you’ve been searching for a bold fashion statement, you need look no farther. It’s right there in black and white. Besides, color is so 2007.
