Sixth Ave heats up dining by night and shopping by day

By Jessica Corey-Butler on December 6, 2007

The epicenter of Tacoma’s nightlife features reasons to visit it by day as well.

Sixth Avenue is known for great dining and nightlife with Asado (2810 Sixth Ave., 253.254.0560) and Masa (2811 Sixth Ave., 253.254.0560) run by John Xitco and Primo Grill (601 S. Pine St., 253.383.7000) and the Crown Bar (2705 Sixth Ave., 253.272.4177) run by Charlie McManus. And don’t forget The Red Hot (2914 Sixth Ave. Suite B), a fabulous little hot dog and beer joint, and the musical fun, food, and libations available at Chopstix (2702 Sixth Ave., 253.627.7555).  On the far ends of the spectrum, both geographically and in vibe, Bella Vita (6108 Sixth Ave., 253.565.1070) offers up chic martini bar dining while O’Malley’s Irish Pub (2403 Sixth Ave., 253.383.3144) serves up its fun tavern style.

Hell’s Kitchen (3829 Sixth Ave., 253.759.6003), the West End Pub & Grill (3840 Sixth Ave., 253.759.2896), The Engine House No. 9 (611 N. Pine St., 253.272.3435) and Farrelli’s Pizza (3518 Sixth Ave., 253759.1999) round out some of the dining and drinking options. Shakabrah Java ( 2618 Sixth Ave., 253.572.2787), the Old Milwaukee Café & Dessert Co. (3102 Sixth Ave., 253.761.2602), Origin 23 Degrees Coffee Roasters (3518 Sixth Ave., 253.212.1503) and not one but two Starbucks locations give more nightlife options with reasons to wake up and eat.

And more compelling reasons to wake up and eat greet Sixth Ave visitors with shopping that spans a range of tastes and needs.  For pre-holiday preparations, Big Vac (2412 Sixth Ave., 253.272.1485) offers commercial cleaning products and vacuums to the public with items that make cleaning less of an onerous chore. Urban Gourmet & Garden (2602 Sixth Ave. #B, 253.272.3111) serves up a great selection of herbs and spices for holiday cooking and baking along with a huge variety of loose teas for the non-grog sippers. In addition to all of these items, many serving and cooking items can be found here as well as great gift candles, scent items, cleaning items from the Caldrea line of products, and much more.

More useful home items can be found alongside whimsical décor and high-style home furnishings as well as some clothing items and accessories for ladies and babies at Posh Home (2502 Sixth Ave., 253.593.5001). Every nook and cranny of the shop contains something for a wide range of personality types, from the Juicy Couture items such as key chains, perfume, and wallets to the Dirt Candles scent line with a sense of humor.

Across from Posh Home, Red Line Style (2503 Sixth Ave., 253.627.9910) also offers up fun accessories and some scent items along with clothing lines True Religion, BCGB Max Azria, and Ed Hardy.  High style men’s clothing can be found here, too, to make hitting the nightlife scene in high style possible for guys and gals.

For the folks who’d rather hit the trails with their four-legged best friends, Lucky Dog Outfitters (3411 Sixth Ave., 253.761.4486) offers up high style items for Fido and Fifi as well as casual accessories such as Life is Good brand hats and T-shirts for humans.  Human-grade, healthy food options for pets also can be found here along with a huge assortment of snacks and toys to fill canine and feline stockings up this holiday season.

There’s a lot more to explore on the Ave — from tattoo shops, salons, and even a pole dancing studio — to provide some memorable, lasting gifts this holiday season.
