3:10 TO YUMA: Christian Bale plays an Easterner who lost a leg in the Civil War and has now come to the Arizona territory to try ranching.  Russell Crowe plays the vicious leader of a gang feared in the territory.  Almost by unlucky fate, the rancher joins a posse to bring the killer to a nearby town where he will be taken by train to prison.  Splendid dialogue and acting, also by Peter Fonda, Ben Foster and Gretchen Mol, restore the wounded heart of the Western and return it to its glory days.  Directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line”). (R) HHHH – RE

Blue Mouse: Fri-Wed 7. Also Sat-Sun 4.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT: Barlow, Alaska, said to be the northernmost town in America, undergoes 30 days without sun every winter, which makes it an ideal holiday haven for vampires.  The townsfolk, led by Josh Hartnett and Melissa George, do battle against ravenous vampire hordes led by Danny Huston, in a film that is well-directed and -acted, but raises the question, is there a shortage of vampire films? ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: Here is a bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical where we walk INTO  the theater humming the songs. Julie Taymor\'s  "Across the Universe" is an audacious marriage of cutting-edge visual techniques, heartwarming performances, 1960s history and the Beatles songbook. With Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther and T.V. Carpio, who sings "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and I realized how wrong I was to ever think that was a happy song. It\'s not happy if it\'s a hand you are never, ever going to hold. Lurking here and there: Bono, Eddie Izzard and Joe Cocker. (PG-13) HHHH – RE

THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD: One of the founders of the cult of celebrity, the ruthless outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt) attracts a young hero-worshipper (Casey Affleck) whose adoration shades into dangerous obsession.  A big-canvas Western with an epic scope, sensationally photographed by Roger Deakins in the tradition of “McCabe and Mrs. Miller” and “Days of Heaven.”  Directed by Andrew Dominik (“Chopper”), who depicts the criminal and the coward in a dance of death. THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: Run, Jason, Run.  The Bourne films have taken chases beyond a storytelling technique and made them into the story.  This time Jason hurtles through London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tangier and Turin in search of the identity the CIA took from him. Matt Damon plays a man who survives one impossible situation after another, in a superior action thriller that doesn’t much care who his enemies are, as long as he’s in a big hurry to find them or escape them.  With Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

THE DARJEELING LIMITED: Three brothers have a reunion in India and take a strange and eccentric train journey in search of themselves, enlightenment, their mother, and certain obscure over-the-counter remedies guaranteed to cure sobriety.  Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman star in a laid-back human comedy that meanders so persuasively, it gets us meandering right along.  With Amara Karan as a seductive train stewardess and Wally Wolodarsky as Wilson’s employee, who issues laminated daily schedules from his office in the baggage car.  Directed by Wes Anderson (“Rushmore,” “The Royal Tenenbaums”). (R) HHH1/2 – RE

ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE: Weighed down by its splendor.  There are scenes where the costumes are so sumptuous, the sets so vast, the music so insistent, that we lose sight of the humans behind the dazzle of the production.  But Cate Blanchett is magnificently regal in the title role, and Clive Owen plays a romantic, swashbuckling, if historically inaccurate, Sir Walter Raleigh.  Directed by Shekhar Kapur, who also made the much better “Elizabeth” (1998). (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

GONE BABY GONE: Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan play lovers and business partners who are private investigators specializing in tracking down deadbeats.  Approached by clients to help find a missing child, they protest that they’re just garden-variety PIs, don’t carry guns, aren’t looking for heavy lifting.  But maybe they’ll see something the cops miss.  Impressive directing debut by Ben Affleck, with a top-drawer supporting cast: Morgan Freeman, Amy Madigan, Ed Harris, Amy Ryan. (R) HHH1/2 – RE

GOOD LUCK CHUCK: The dirty movie of the year, with Dane Cook starring as a dentist with a curse: Every woman he sleeps with immediately leaves him for the husband of her dreams.  Jessica Alba plays the woman of his dreams, but he’s afraid to sleep with her because, obviously, etc.  With Dan Fogler as the best friend and breast fetishist.  Potty-mouthed and icky. (R) H – RE

Lakewood Towne Center 12: Thurs 3, 5:15, 7:25, 9:35.

Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs noon, 3:40, 6:50, 9:15.

THE HEARTBREAK KID: Farrelly brothers remake of Elaine May’s splendid 1972 comedy is sunk by vulgarity that breaks the fabric of the characters.  Ben Stiller and Malin Akerman play newlyweds who turn out to be spectacularly incompatible, while he falls in love with a babe (Michelle Monaghan) he meets on the beach.  The transgressive material is badly judged, and the characters become unpleasant not only to each other, but to us. (R) HH – RE

INTO THE WILD: Sean Penn directed this much anticipated adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s bestselling book about a college student who drops out of society to hitchhike across America with Alaska being his final destination.  Emile Hirsh stars as the adventurous and tragic Chris.  Also stars Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Catherine Keener and Vince Vaughn. (R) – BW

THE KINGDOM: “The Kingdom” is one of many movies in the ever growing “boy the Middle East sucks” genre that’s taken over theaters since it became clear to most of the country that the war on terror isn’t going to be easily won.  But director Peter Berg’s film is more than just another face in the crowd.  It’s by far the best of that depressing, sand-soaked group; mixing action and intentionally obvious political relevance together in a movie that’s part police procedural, part military action, and all smarts.  Stars Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner. (R) HHH1/2 – JT

AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 2:45, 5:25, 8:05.

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL: Ryan Gosling plays Lars Lindstrom, a painfully shy young man who can barely stand the touch of another human being.  One day he orders a life-sized love doll through the Internet, using “Bianca” not for sex but for companionship.  He expects everyone else to treat the doll the same way, including his brother (Paul Schneider), sister-in-law (Emily Mortimer) and therapist (Patricia Clarkson).  Only after the movie is over do you realize what a balancing act it was, what risks it took, what rewards is contains.  Directed by Craig Gillespie, written by Nancy Oliver (“Six Feet Under”). (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

Regal Martin Village 16: Thurs 11:30 a.m., 2, 4:40, 7:20, 10:25.

LUST, CAUTION: Covers the years 1938-1942 in the love affair between a Chinese official (Tony Leung) who is collaborating with his country’s Japanese occupiers and a young woman (Tang Wei) who poses as a rich merchant’s wife but is actually part of a group plotting to assassinate him.  As their sexual lives grow more extreme, both are drawn away from their everyday reality and into a private world.  Directed by Ang Lee, winner of the Golden Lion at Venice 2007. MICHAEL CLAYTON: George Clooney plays a slick, efficient but weary fixer for a big law firm, Sydney Pollack is the head of the firm, Tom Wilkinson is the partner who has just stripped naked during a deposition hearing in Milwaukee, and Tilda Swinton represents the corporate client who is horrified to find such a man leading their defense.  A near-perfect example of the legal/business thriller, with the usual undercurrents of guilt and shame.  Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who wrote all the “Bourne” pictures, but here he prefers a more classical visual and storytelling style that is relentless. (R) HHHH – RE

RENDITION: Gavin Hood’s terrifying, intelligent thriller tells the story of an Egyptian-born American, who is “disappeared” from a flight by the CIA and held without good cause for torture and interrogation.  Reese Witherspoon plays his pregnant wife, who turns to an old boyfriend (Peter Saarsgard) to intervene with his boss, a senator (Alan Arkin).  Meryl Streep chillingly plays the U.S. head of intelligence, and Jake Gyllenhaal is the troubled CIA bureau chief in the country that is hired to torture the man.  A big, confident, effective film with its politics seamlessly a part of its story.  Hood won an Oscar in 2005 for his “Tsotsi.” (R) HHHH – RE

THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING: A young boy learns that he is that last of a race of immortal warriors who have defended the world from evil throughout history.  One question.  If they’re “immortal warriors” why is he the last of them?  Now I’m curious. (PG) – BW

TIM BURTON’S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN DISNEY DIGITAL 3D: Tim Burton’s holiday classic is re-released in “Disney Digital 3D.”  Normally, I’m pretty cynical about a Hollywood move like this. However, I must admit, even the network news is more exciting since I got my digital cable box.  This might be worth a look. (PG) – BW

THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE: A new widow (Halle Berry) is moved to invite her late husband’s best friend (Benicio Del Toro) to live in a room in her family’s garage — an improvement from his life as a recovering heroin addict.  No, not a love story, but the portrait of two damaged people who loved the same man more than anyone else did.  A perceptive view of how grief affects us, and an accurate look at the best friend’s experiences in a 12-step program.  American debut of Danish director Susanne Bier (“Open Hearts,” “Brothers”). WE OWN THE NIGHT: Joaquin Phoenix plays a Brooklyn nightclub manager who has changed his name to conceal his relationship with his father, the district police chief (Robert Duvall), and his brother, a top cop (Mark Wahlberg).  But now a war is starting between the cops and the Russian gangsters who own the club and control the drug trade.  Which side is Phoenix on?  Eva Mendes supplies an interesting dimension as a girlfriend who really loves and cares for him, and isn’t just another bimbo turncoat.  The material isn’t original, and the plot has some holes in it, but it’s atmospheric and well-acted.  Written and directed by James Gray (“Little Odessa,” “The Yards”).
