Breakin' for Beverly

It’s about time — another b-boy battle in Tacoma. The honest truth — Tacoma is blessed to have some of the best in the world and some of the best b-boy battles on the left coast. I’ll gladly argue with anyone who wants to disagree. This weekend South Sound hip-hop

Fun with math, Halloween style

Here’s something to nibble on: that sweet morsel of Halloween candy that you just popped into your mouth had somewhere between 70 to 90 calories, if it was a snack-sized thing. That little bag that you thought was a healthier choice — the peanut M&Ms, since peanuts are a source

Dannie Neitzelt

Dannie Neitzelt is a smooth operator, even more so when off the clock from her barista gig for Tully’s. We found her Monday night at Top of Tacoma Bar enjoying a new cocktail she just made up, the Dolly (as in Parton). Neitzelt is a smart shopper. She doesn’t waste her coin

Art @ Work

Tacoma’s Art at Work Month has become a Godzilla’s feast of literary, visual and performing arts. Is there any other town of comparable size in the Western Hemisphere that has anything to match it? I don’t think so. November is Art at Work Month. Festivities begin with an opening celebration

Roller derby finals, Art at Work and more

THE CONTEST Define-a-Thon Funny, I was just in Goodwill the other day and saw a (used) For Dummies product that made me wince openly. It was, I think, Cookies for Dummies. Not a book. Some sort of kit. Some sort of toxic powdered mix in a large porcelain Dummies-logoed container, with dumbed-down

Good, ribald fun in Hell

Say “let’s go to the opera” and eyes may glaze with visions of large women in Viking hats breaking beer bottles with their sustained vibrato. Say “let’s go to a two-hour romp with dancing and singing, centering around a bawdy story about philandering gods” and the reaction might change. Turns out, in
