THE 11TH HOUR: A dire warning about the demise of planet Earth, presented in a deadening format of talking heads and what often looks like stock nature footage.  The doc has a lot of valuable information, but fails to convey it in an effective, involving way.  Rent Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” instead. (PG) HH – RE

Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: Thurs 12:30, 2:45, 7:05.

3:10 TO YUMA: Christian Bale plays an Easterner who lost a leg in the Civil War and has now come to the Arizona territory to try ranching.  Russell Crowe plays the vicious leader of a gang feared in the territory.  Almost by unlucky fate, the rancher joins a posse to bring the killer to a nearby town where he will be taken by train to prison.  Splendid dialogue and acting, also by Peter Fonda, Ben Foster and Gretchen Mol, restore the wounded heart of the Western and return it to its glory days.  Directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line”). ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: Here is a bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical where we walk INTO  the theater humming the songs. Julie Taymor\'s  "Across the Universe" is an audacious marriage of cutting-edge visual techniques, heartwarming performances, 1960s history and the Beatles songbook. With Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther and T.V. Carpio, who sings "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and I realized how wrong I was to ever think that was a happy song. It\'s not happy if it\'s a hand you are never, ever going to hold. Lurking here and there: Bono, Eddie Izzard and Joe Cocker. HHHH — RE

BALLS OF FURY: Former child pingpong phenom Randy Daytona (Dan Fogler), now in his 20s and grown pudgy, is discovered in Vegas by Rodriguez (George Lopez), an FBI agent who wants him to get back into training so he can compete undercover in an illegal global pingpong and martial arts tournament run by the evil criminal weapons dealer Mr. Feng (Christopher Walken). Co-starring James Hong as blind Master Wong and Maggie Q as his niece, who act as Daytona’s coaches. Not all that bad. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

THE BRAVE ONE: Jodie Foster plays a radio talker whose fiance is murdered by muggers in Central Park.  Recovering from her own wounds, she buys a gun for self-protection, which turns into revenge.  This superior, perceptive thriller isn’t a “Death Wish” remake, but a psychological study of a subtle understanding that takes shadowy form between Foster and a detective played by Terrence Howard. Directed by Neil Jordan. (R) HHH1/2 – RE

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: Run, Jason, Run.  The Bourne films have taken chases beyond a storytelling technique and made them into the story.  This time Jason hurtles through London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tangier and Turin in search of the identity the CIA took from him. Matt Damon plays a man who survives one impossible situation after another, in a superior action thriller that doesn’t much care who his enemies are, as long as he’s in a big hurry to find them or escape them.  With Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

EASTERN PROMISES: One of David Cronenberg’s finest films with Viggo Mortensen as a driver for the Russian Mafia in London, and Naomi Watts as a midwife determined to protect the life of a newborn infant.  A diary leads her to the sealed world of the Russians, led by Armin Mueller-Stahl as the patriarch and Vincent Cassel as his son; the result isn’t exactly a crime story, but a thriller about human nature.  Scenes of startling violence. GOOD LUCK CHUCK: The dirty movie of the year, with Dane Cook starring as a dentist with a curse: Every woman he sleeps with immediately leaves him for the husband of her dreams.  Jessica Alba plays the woman of his dreams, but he’s afraid to sleep with her because, obviously, etc.  With Dan Fogler as the best friend and breast fetishist.  Potty-mouthed and icky. HAIRSPRAY: Pure fun, from the moment a roly-poly teenager named Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) bounces out of bed and serenades the neighborhood with “Good Morning, Baltimore!”  Circa 1962, she dreams of getting on the local TV teen dance show, but on her way there she gets indignant about how the show is all-white except for one day a month.  Based on the 1988 movie and the 2002 Broadway musical; still fresh.  With John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Christopher Walken. (PG) HHH1/2 – RE

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX: Harry is convinced the evil Voldemort has returned, but no one will heed his warning, and the Ministry of Magic cracks down, imposing a fearsome new teacher (Imelda Staunton) at Hogwarts.  Her name is Umbridge, and she takes plenty.  Harry and friends hatch a plot to defend Headmaster Dumbledore from her ravages, in a movie that is darker, more solemn, less whimsical than we expect in the series. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

Blue Mouse: Fri-Wed 7. Also Sat-Sun 3:45.

THE HUNTING PARTY: Richard Gere stars as TV news reporter Simon Hunt, who along with his cameraman Duck (Terence Howard) have covered the news from the world’s most dangerous locations.  After freaking out on camera in Bosnia and disappearing, Hunt turns up five years later with the promise of a dangerous scoop. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON: I never use the words “must-see,” which have been cheapened by association with so many films you need not see.  But this extraordinary documentary, interviewing many of the surviving Apollo astronauts about their voyages to the moon, combines restored and in many cases never-before-seen moon footage into a spellbinding experience.  Especially recommended for those to whom Apollo is only a word in a history book. (PG) HHHH – RE

IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH: Tommy Lee Jones plays a Vietnam veteran who learns his son, just returned home from Iraq, has gone AWOL from Fort Rudd.  Doesn’t sound right to him, and he drives down to investigate, crossing paths with a local detective (Charlize Theron) and a military policeman (Jason Patric).  Not pumped up with action, not a “thriller,” but a portrait of a man in pain, who stubbornly just keeps on digging.  Another masterful film from Paul Haggis (“Crash”). THE JOY LUCK CLUB: This week’s Cans Film Festival feature:

The "Joy Luck Club" of the title is a group of four older Chinese ladies who meet once a week to play mah jong, and compare stories of their families and grandchildren.  All have made harrowing journeys from pre-revolutionary China to the comfortable homes in San Francisco where they meet.  But those old days are not often spoken about, and sometimes the whole truth of them is not known. (R) HHHH – RE

Blue Mouse: Thurs, Oct. 11 7.

THE KINGDOM: “The Kingdom” is one of many movies in the ever growing “boy the Middle East sucks” genre that’s taken over theaters since it became clear to most of the country that the war on terror isn’t going to be easily won.  But director Peter Berg’s film is more than just another face in the crowd.  It’s by far the best of that depressing, sand-soaked group; mixing action and intentionally obvious political relevance together in a movie that’s part police procedural, part military action, and all smarts.  Stars Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner. MR. BEAN’S HOLIDAY: As always, Rowan Atkinson’s gift for physical comedy and his rubbery facial expressions give life to his iconic Mr. Bean character.  In this unusual “road” comedy, we follow the bumbling Bean from one mishap and misadventure to another in a comedy of errors that would have been better if the predictable “Bean” bits had not slowed down the pace between the more original and funny scenes in the film. (PG) HH1/2 – BZ

Century Olympia: Thurs 1, 3:15, 5:30, 7:50. Fri-Thurs, Oct. 11 12:45, 3, 5:15.

MR. WOODCOCK: Billy Bob Thornton in full “Bad Santa” mode in an uneasy comedy about an adult (Seann William Scott) who returns home to discover his mother (Susan Sarandon) is planning to marry the gym teacher (Thornton) who made his high school days a living hell.  Thornton makes no compromises and takes no prisoners when he plays Woodcock.  He’s a hateful jerk, and he means it.  That makes the movie better, actually, than if we sensed a heart of gold. OUTSOURCED: A film bursting with affection for its characters and for India.  Josh Hamilton plays an American exec sent to India to train a telephone order-fulfillment center for his tacky novelty company (Wisconsin cheesehead hats a specialty).  The beautiful Ayesha Dharker plays an employee who is ahead of the learning curve; they generate amazing chemistry.  Not a great movie, but maybe couldn’t be this charming if it was.  There is a fundamental sweetness and innocence to it; leaves you feeling good. POLTERGEIST 25TH ANNIVERSARY: They’re back! An effective thriller, not so much because of the special effects, as because director Tobe Hooper and producer Steven Spielberg have tried to see the movie\'s strange events through the eyes of the family members, instead of just standing back and letting the special effects overwhelm the cast along with the audience. The movie takes place in Spielberg\'s favorite terrain, the American suburb. The haunted house doesn\'t have seven gables, but it does have a two-car garage. It is occupied by a fairly normal family (two parents, three kids) and the movie begins on a somewhat hopeful note with the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner" as a TV station signs off. Then all hell breaks loose. (R) HHH — RE

RATATOUILLE: Disney and Pixar deliver a marvelous animated tale of friendship, following one’s dreams and the art of French haute cuisine.  The hero of the story is a tiny Parisian rat named Remy (voice by Patton Oswalt), who one day finds himself in the kitchen of one of the world’s greatest chefs, where he soon befriends the kitchen’s busboy Linguini (voice by Lou Romano).  The two form a unique bond that affords Remy the chance to indulge in his culinary artistry and Linguini the chance to make something of himself.  The computer-animated visuals are stunning, the story is compelling, and the music will carry you away.  The film is rated G, which stands for gloriously entertaining. Grownups will find this one irresistible. Oh yeah, the kiddies will like it, too. (G) HHH1/2 – MD

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE: A feature-length adventure starring America’s most dysfunctional family, which succeeds in the nearly fatal pollution of Springfield.  That story is interspersed with a lot of political asides and a wickedly funny spoof of the most famous sequence in the Austin Powers movies. (PG-13) HHH – RE

Lakewood Towne Center 12: Thurs 1:15, 3:25, 5:25.

STARDUST: A shooting star (Claire Danes) falls into a forbidden kingdom, and Charlie Cox enters the kingdom to get it for his love (Sienna Miller).  Also fighting for the star/woman: a wicked witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a dying king (Peter O’Toole).  Robert De Niro turns up as a cross-dressing pirate in an airship.  Cluttered and too busy; funny, not boring, but “The Princess Bride” it’s not. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

SUPERBAD: Four-letter raunch-a-rama with a heart, and a fascination for other key organs.  Best friends Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) have been inseparable in high school, mainly because they were equally unpopular.  Now it is the last night of the high school year, bringing to mind the ancient truism that if you haven’t had sex yet and you don’t have it tonight, you will never have had sex in high school. TRANSFORMERS: Shia LaBeouf stars as a high school student who gets a used Camaro that is part of an invasion by two groups of battling robots.   The Transformers and Decepticons can twist, fold and double in upon themselves, like a Rubik’s Cube crossed with a contortionist.  Opening scenes are exciting and funny, with a lot of stuff that blows up real good, but the grand finale, robots battling in special effects, goes on too long.
