Tommy James & the Shondells

Music history comes to the Emerald Queen

These guys evoke memories of sitting in front of the console stereo spinning 45s when I was just a wee lad. Yes, I was a music geek as early as age 5. You might know songs like “Mony Mony,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” and “Crimson and Clover” as ’80s classics, but in reality they each charted twice. The originators of these ultra poppy tunes was Tommy James & the Shondells. From 1966 to 1969 the group had an impressive 14 Top-40 hits. Their sound was quintessentially ’60s with post- Meet the Beatles hooks, melodies and phrases. They could have easily been a one-hit-wonder after their first single hit Billboard, but James had the ability to craft the perfect pop song, whether self-penned or arranged, which kept them from joining that group of artists. The band hit it out of the park with their bubblegum delicious debut LP and single, “Hanky Panky.” Following their 1970 recording the band decided to take a breather. James went on to pursue a solo career and took a stab at everything, including country, and cracked the top 20 in 1980 with the single, “Three Times in Love.”
