BECOMING JANE: Fictionalized speculation about a great romance in Jane Austen’s 20th year.  The would-be author (Anne Hathaway) meets a handsome lawyer (James McAvoy) and wonders, if he loses his allowance from his spiteful uncle, could she support them by her writing (mostly still unwritten)?  Engaging love story in charming Britlit Land (actually Ireland), even if it’s mostly made up and has little to do with the real Jane.  With Julie Walters, James Cromwell and Maggie Smith. THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: Run, Jason, Run.  The Bourne films have taken chases beyond a storytelling technique and made them into the story.  This time Jason hurtles through London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tangier and Turin in search of the identity the CIA took from him. Matt Damon plays a man who survives one impossible situation after another, in a superior action thriller that doesn’t much care who his enemies are, as long as he’s in a big hurry to find them or escape them.  With Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

BRATZ: Based on the fashion doll line, four teenage girls find their friendship tested by the rigid world of high school cliques.  It’s a lot of fun, if you can ignore the clumsy ethnic characterizations and don’t look too deeply. (PG) HH1/2 – PW

DADDY DAY CAMP: Cuba Gooding Jr. steps into Eddie Murphy’s role in this misguided sequel to “Daddy Day Care,” and makes a film choice that demeans his obvious acting ability.  The acting is atrocious, the jokes are stale and the storyline is predictable. (PG) H1/2 – BZ

HAIRSPRAY: Pure fun, from the moment a roly-poly teenager named Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) bounces out of bed and serenades the neighborhood with “Good Morning, Baltimore!”  Circa 1962, she dreams of getting on the local TV teen dance show, but on her way there she gets indignant about how the show is all-white except for one day a month.  Based on the 1988 movie and the 2002 Broadway musical; still fresh.  With John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Christopher Walken. (PG) HHH1/2 – RE

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX: Harry is convinced the evil Voldemort has returned, but no one will heed his warning, and the Ministry of Magic cracks down, imposing a fearsome new teacher (Imelda Staunton) at Hogwarts.  Her name is Umbridge, and she takes plenty.  Harry and friends hatch a plot to defend Headmaster Dumbledore from her ravages, in a movie that is darker, more solemn, less whimsical than we expect in the series. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 1, 4:05, 7, 10. Fri-Thurs, Aug. 23 1:20, 4:10, 7, 9:50. Also Sat morning 10:20 a.m.

Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: Thurs 2:10, 5:05, 8. Fri-Thurs, Aug. 23 2:30, 9:25.

HOT ROD: “SNL” freshman Andy Samberg is perfectly cast as a young daredevil who dreams of fame.  Something, however, always seems to go wrong with his stunts; he’s Evel Knievel on a moped, leading a life resembling an episode of “Jackass.”  Surprisingly funny, because he’s shown as sincere but extremely misguided, rather than played broadly as a maniacal goofball. (PG-13) HHH – RE

AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 7:50, 10:15.

Century Olympia: Thurs 11:10 a.m., 4:35, 10:05.

Yelm Cinema: Thurs 4:50, 9:30.

I KNOW WHO KILLED ME: Tough to know if star Lindsay Lohan’s recent DUI and coke bust will help or hinder this week’s serial killer/torture movie.  My guess is she is pointing to herself in the mirror saying, “I know who killed my career.”  A wasted talent.  Also stars Julia Ormond who has rarely been seen since she spent the entire three hours of “Legends of the Fall” crying.  I still loved her. (R) – BW

Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs 9:40.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY: Firefighter Kevin James saves his friend Adam Sandler from the collapse of a burning building, so Sandler grants his colleague “any favor.”  Widower James decides that they should masquerade as domestic partners to ensure that James’ children will be entitled to his city benefits should he be killed in the line of duty.  A funny premise turns into an uneven and choppy cinematic ride.  The hearts of the filmmakers are in the right place; it’s a shame they didn’t try harder to make this funny.  With Jessica Biel, Steve Buscemi and Dan Aykroyd. (PG-13) HH1/2 – BZ

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD: Nearly two decades after creating one of the most iconic antihero cops in modern action-movie history, a lean and now bullet-headed Bruce Willis is in classic form as NYPD Det. John McClane, who is once again thrust into a cataclysmic emergency in which he is facing insurmountable odds.  Two hours of pure adrenaline. (PG-13) HHH – RR

Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs 6:40, 9:35.

NO RESERVATIONS: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart co-star as rival chefs; she hates him as a rival, but inevitably they’re drawn together, thanks partly to the matchmaking of her sister’s orphaned child (Abigail Breslin).  Alas, the characters seem to feel more passion for food than for one another.  Remake of the 2002 German film “Mostly Martha.”  With Patricia Clarkson, Bob Balaban.  Directed by Scott Hicks (“Shine”). (PG) HH – RE

Something Strange Saturday double feature: She Devil on Wheels (NR) and She Freak (NR), see preview page 4. Sat 9 p.m.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END: Director Gore Verbinski and the stunt and special effects crews have created one of the most impressive blends of live-action work and CGI wizardry ever put on film.  Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley have poured so much talent and energy into their roles, I have to acknowledge that even though I haven’t been the biggest fan of the “Pirates” franchise, these characters have earned their iconic status. (PG-13) HHH – RR

Blue Mouse Theatre: Nightly 7. Also Sat-Sun 3.

RATATOUILLE: Disney and Pixar deliver a marvelous animated tale of friendship, following one’s dreams and the art of French haute cuisine.  The hero of the story is a tiny Parisian rat named Remy (voice by Patton Oswalt), who one day finds himself in the kitchen of one of the world’s greatest chefs, where he soon befriends the kitchen’s busboy Linguini (voice by Lou Romano).  The two form a unique bond that affords Remy the chance to indulge in his culinary artistry and Linguini the chance to make something of himself.  The computer-animated visuals are stunning, the story is compelling, and the music will carry you away.  The film is rated G, which stands for gloriously entertaining. Grownups will find this one irresistible. Oh yeah, the kiddies will like it, too. (G) HHH1/2 – MD

RUSH HOUR 3: Chris Tucker is once again Carter, the motormouth LAPD cop who’s always in trouble, and Jackie Chan is once again Lee, the ace Hong Kong cop called in to partner with him.  A case involving an ambassador’s shooting and secret documents from a Triad gang sends them to Paris, where of course it is necessary for them to defend their lives while hanging from the Eiffel Tower.  Pretty much what you’d expect, but kinda fun. (PG-13) HH ¬– RE

Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: 12:35, 2:50, 4:55, 7:20, 9:40.

SICKO: Michael Moore’s litany of horrors about the American health care system, which is run for profit, and insurance companies, who pay bonuses to employees who are successful in denying coverage or claims.  Moore tones down his usual humor and seriously, sympathetically listens to such people as a 9/11 volunteer who can’t get the treatment she needs.  Likely to strike home with anyone, liberal or conservative, who has had serious illness in the family. (PG-13) HHH1/2 – RE

The Grand Cinema: Thurs 12:30, 8:20.

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE: A feature-length adventure starring America’s most dysfunctional family, which succeeds in the nearly fatal pollution of Springfield.  That story is interspersed with a lot of political asides and a wickedly funny spoof of the most famous sequence in the Austin Powers movies. (PG-13) HHH – RE

STARDUST: A shooting star (Claire Danes) falls into a forbidden kingdom, and Charlie Cox enters the kingdom to get it for his love (Sienna Miller).  Also fighting for the star/woman: a wicked witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a dying king (Peter O’Toole).  Robert De Niro turns up as a cross-dressing pirate in an airship.  Cluttered and too busy; funny, not boring, but “The Princess Bride” it’s not. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

SUNSHINE: The sun is dying, and a desperate space mission seeks to re-ignite it.  The crew finds the close quarters confining, and some of them are overwhelmed by the metaphysical aspects of the journey.  Written by Alex Garland, directed by Danny Boyle, with awesome special effects and some sinister developments on their way past Mercury.  With Michelle Yeoh, Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Troy Garity, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong. TRANSFORMERS: Shia LaBeouf stars as a high school student who gets a used Camaro that is part of an invasion by two groups of battling robots.   The Transformers and Decepticons can twist, fold and double in upon themselves, like a Rubik’s Cube crossed with a contortionist.  Opening scenes are exciting and funny, with a lot of stuff that blows up real good, but the grand finale, robots battling in special effects, goes on too long. VITUS: A sentimental, crowd-pleasing “Pinocchio” fable that turns the child prodigy movie on its ear a bit.  The title character (pronounced “Vee-toos”) is a budding piano genius who, like Pinocchio, wants nothing more than to become a real boy.  So, the movie isn’t so much about the kid triumphing over adversity and realizing his artistic and competitive potential; it’s about how he longs to be someone else: a normal kid.  Enjoyable performances by all, particularly Bruno Ganz and the two piano prodigies who play Vitus: Fabrizio Borsani at age 6 and Teo Gheorghiu at age 12. The Grand Cinema: Thurs 3, 5:45.

UNDERDOG: Based on the animated television series, a mysterious lab accident gives an ordinary beagle unimaginable powers, including the ability to speak. The new super-dog-hero vows to protect his town from the evil mad scientist whose lab Underdog gained his powers from. (PG) – BW
