I said Poekoelan, not Poekeman

Martial arts in downtown Tacoma

The Indonesian word Poekoelan, roughly translated, means returning blows with hands and feet and is at the center of a form of martial art brought to America via Asia by Mas Goeroe Agoeng Willy Wetzel in the 1950s. Justine Kreher, who has been training and teaching this martial art for more than 12 years and received her black belt, operates Tulen Center Tacoma in downtown’s Antique Row. Kreher describes the martial art as “a very beautiful and effective form of self-defense that incorporates animal styles of movements of the monkey, tiger, crane and snake.  All techniques are easily modified to suit a person’s ability while conditioning and increasing flexibility and strength.”

One-hour beginner’s classes are offered for a free two-week trial period after a one-on-one with Kreher.  Classes are offered at 7:15 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
