Public art tours

Back when I worked in downtown Olympia, I faced cockroaches the size of mice, mice the size of cats, and cats with nasty cases of pinkeye. And that was just in my office. Would it make you feel better if I told you that the office is now a restaurant? Yeah, we didn’t think so. Let’s forget about all that for a moment and focus positive downtown changes. Public art.

The Olympia Parks, Arts & Recreation and the Olympia Arts Commission hosts free guided tours along Olympia’s scenic waterfront to learn about the public art that shapes and defines downtown Olympia. Tours take approximately one hour and include information on “The Kiss and South Sound Map,” “Motherhood,” “Tidepool of Time,” and “Triumph of the Vegetables.” — Suzy Stump

Beauty!

Some of the most sought after tickets of the year are now on sale. Tacoma Musical Playhouse is producing a stage version of the Academy Award-winning feature film “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” The stage version tells the classic story of the lovely bookworm who finds herself falling in love with a prince in beast’s clothing.  — Steve Dunkelberger

Now you can commit the center stage sing-along sin with Bob’s Java Jive and Gertie’s karaoke host superstar Colin every Tuesday at Jazzbones. Outdoor Shumba

I know. You’re all trying to figure out what kind of snotty thing I’m going to say here. Maybe you’re expecting some creepy little comment about how funny Shumba sounds or something. Not gonna happen. The Shumba Marimba Ensemble are a bunch of kids!  The Weekly Volcano is not about making kids and their parents cry, well, at least not this week. The high energy marimba group will perform outdoors at American Lake Park in Lakewood. The City of Lakewood hosts world beat concerts every Tuesday night in the park. — SS
