The Swiss Kiss

There was one event last week that still has my heart a-flutter. Love Tacoma. In case you hadn’t heard (where have you been?), Love Tacoma is a group of volunteers who are creating fun social and cultural events to unite 20-and 30-somethings throughout Tacoma. What a novel idea! So their inaugural event fell on

Hotel hell rings a bell

It is difficult not to compare every movie based on a Stephen King horror story to the greatness of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” (1980).  There have been other great King-to-screen fright fests, notably Brian De Palma’s “Carrie” (1976) and Rob Reiner’s “Misery” (1990), but there was something extra about Kubrick’s

Abandon ark!

Oh, my God, this movie sucks.  I’ll say this much: Kudos to Jim Carrey for pulling off perhaps the most amazing disappearing-act hat trick in motion-picture history.  With his non-appearance in “Evan Almighty,” the follow-up to the smash hit “Bruce Almighty” (2003), Carrey has now NOT appeared in three of

A Mighty Heart

“A Mighty Heart” begins with shots of the teeming streets of Karachi, Pakistan, a city with a population that seems jammed in shoulder-to-shoulder. Terrorists will emerge from this sea of humanity, kidnap the American journalist Daniel Pearl, and disappear. The film is about the desperate search for Pearl (Dan Futterman)

Experiment No. 13

For the last three years, Matt Driscoll has covered the Olympia Experimental Music Festival.  Each time, he’s interviewed Arrington De Dionyso, who for the past 12 years was the festival’s curator. This year things have changed. Not only did Mr. Driscoll, probably wearing a cardigan soiled with baby urine and shopping online
