Sing with a live band

Monday Rockaraoke is freakin’ nuts at Jazzbones

By Natasha Gorbachev on May 17, 2007

Normally on weekdays I stick to my guns so I can continue to churn out amazing accomplishments at my above-ground professional job.

But this fine rag, my nightlife investigations, along with an ever-evolving city, has been keeping me underground all week long lately.

I don’t mind, though, because I’m too young to sleep anyway.

Time and time again I’ve heard reports that there are hella heads at a single destination on Mondays.

Thus, I had to rock it late night yet again.

Quintessentially rock it:

Rockaroke at Jazzbones.

Angela Jossy, that fine piece of class, has given it props in your Weekly Volcano before, but I’m here to tell you that it’s blown up even more since then.

All kinds of people thoroughly saturate that establishment with the flood gates opening at 10 p.m. You’ll find allota college kids, restaurant industry homies and all sorts of people who are fascinated with the opportunity to be the lead singer with the band.

The Jager flows at $4 a shot, Miller High Life goes down for $1, and each time the door opens, another waft of come-on-I-wanna-cologne or puttin-out-parfum sweeps in.

And how cool: There’s no cover charge.

Discussions with Jesse, one of Tacoma’s very, very best (and devilishly handsome) bartenders, led me to the conclusion that Rockaroke is approachable for all ages, colors, habits, decisions or a lack thereof. That obviously works for me.

And it’s without a doubt hilarious. I especially like the strapping young male who delivers intense pelvic thrusts while screaming, “MORE! MORE! MORE!”

It’s also surprising to witness performers’ selections, such as when a tattooed and pierced partner offered his rendition of “So Happy Together.” So sweet.

There are lots of heavy hitters, too, with some seriously talented renditions of songs such as “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Jesse’s Girl,” and a sultry female delivery of “Seven Nation Army.” That’s tight.

As a chicken shit audience member (I swear I’ll get up there one day), it’s painfully difficult to sit still, let alone keep my mouth shut. The hundreds of people there jointly sing along, shake their shoulders, and air guitars abound.

Every single attendee is surely thankful for one thing: The band. Most of the on-stage performers thank them on mic. We all know that those guys are making dreams come true.

But more than anything, I think it’s great that there’s something so poppin’ on a silly little Monday.

If you’re one of those people who likes to plan ahead, go to www.jazzbones.com, which links to the Rockaroke site. That’s where a master song list resides.

As for me, I’ll be droppin’ a little “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” soon.
